About Shiva:

Shiva, translating to "The Auspicious One," is a venerable deity within Hinduism, revered as Parameshwara (the Supreme God), Mahadeva, Mahesh ("Great God"), and Bholenath ("Simple Lord"). As a key figure in Shaivism, one of Hinduism's principal denominations, Shiva embodies a significant aspect of the divine. He is acknowledged as "the Destroyer" or "the Transformer" within the Trimurti, the Hindu Trinity comprising Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva.

Worshipped often through the iconic representation of the Lingam, Shiva epitomizes limitless transcendence and unchanging formlessness. Nevertheless, he manifests in various forms, both benevolent and fierce. In his more compassionate aspects, he is portrayed as an omniscient Yogi residing on Mount Kailash or as a devoted householder with his wife Parvati and their two sons, Ganesha and Kartikeya. Alternatively, he exhibits fierce attributes when depicted vanquishing demons. Iconographic features associated with Shiva include a prominent third eye, a snake around his neck, a crescent moon atop his head, the river Ganga flowing through his matted hair, the trishula (trident) as his weapon, and the damaru (drum) as his musical instrument. Contemporary representations of Shiva exhibit similarities with the Vedic deity Rudra.

About Shiva Sahasranamam:

The Shiva Sahasranamam comes in two distinct versions: one found in the Linga Purana—taught by Lord Krishna—and another in the Anushasanika Parva of the Mahabharata.

In the Mahabharata account, Yudhishthira requests Bhishma to impart the thousand names of Lord Shiva after hearing the Vishnu Sahasranama. Bhishma defers this request to Lord Krishna, who learned it from Sage Upamanyu and subsequently teaches it to Yudhishthira.
